I can't see why the 'road' version wouldn't suffice. Cross bars seem to cope pretty well off road and it's not like you'll be getting all rad and what-not

I suspect its because the sweep back grip bits (technical term) are welded on, instead of being bent back, giving a weak point at which they could break, though I could be completely wrong?
