Which Lightweight pegs ????
So I have got to the point where I can't leave any more stuff out of my bikepacking gear to lighten my load.
For quite a few WRT's and the like I have decided that the best form of weight saving is not to take as much kit.
ie why take 3 days food when you will pass many many shops on your way.
So my tent pegs feel a bit lardy. So whats light and cheap .
Oh I am using some karrimor ali ones at the moment 13 grams each and £2.99 for six .
Can I go lower for sensible money ????

Alpkit Ti pins are half the weight @ 6.5g each and not stupidly small (165mm x 3mm) ... £15 for 10.

... or use sticks, then nothing to carry. Works surprisingly often and well when hanging (i.e. in the woods). Not sure I'd always rely on it to bivi.

Re: Which Lightweight pegs ????
I decided to go for these:

I only need 6 for my tarp so and at 17gms each I get a secure peg that I can be pretty clumsy with and get away with it.
Used recently in longer grass being bright red with red pull cords meant I'm less likely to lose them.

Re: Which Lightweight pegs ????
Alpkit Tikes for me - carry 8 (of the 10 in the pack) for the tarp tent - good holding in everything including very sandy soils..
• Weight per peg: 12 g
• Tikes are 16 cm long, and 14 mm wide.
• Pack size: 10
• Titanium
£17.00 for a pack

Re: Which Lightweight pegs ????
I've got the Terra Nova candy cane ones with my Laser Comp, and have had no problems whatsoever with them. The ones with the yellow plastic on the crook of them - unsure of the weight.
However, if you're looking to go light on short events, ditch the tarp altogether and go with a pure bivi. I'm toying with this for all my riding as one night in the rain isn't the end of the world.

Re: Which Lightweight pegs ????
Pegs are the one of the areas that I find saving weight can lead to a negative impact in actual use
The lightest pegs, like Ti skewers, don't hold anything well when the ground is vaguely soft. I sometimes use them for ancillary points, but anything taking a proper load is done with something like an Alpkit Y stake. They're not light per se, but they certainly aren't heavy, but they're great value and work incredibly well.
Ti versions or ones that are similar cost quite a bit more and save relatively little weight overall.
Mind you, I bent one of my Y stakes trying to dig a cat hole on the WRT. I've already picked up an MSR blizzard peg for next time but I suspect that a Ti version would have been stronger...

Re: Which Lightweight pegs ????
Also you don't need all the pegs to be the same. You can use the strong v shape ones for the high stress points and the ti wire ones for the low stress points. And don't use all the pegging points.
Re: Which Lightweight pegs ????
lots of sensible stuff here, thanks guys.
As many of you have said I am not going to save much weight at all.
My 8 karrimor v pegs come in at 104g , so even if I go with Stuarts suggestion that will only save 52g . So not really much at all.
Maybe look for other things to lighten up on.
Maybe my Tesco sleeping bag ???
Thanks all

I guess I was saying the weight loss is negligible but functionality loss is huge. Or something.s8tannorm wrote:If you listen to Nigel you can go 4g heavier and it'll only cost £5.50 ... a total gain of 24gCan I go lower for sensible money ????
