Merino wear or similar. Whats everyone wearing?

Post by Ravens_Outdoor »

Whats everyone wearing for a single "merino" style long sleeve top? You know, dry weather, potentially not warm or cold, JRA wear for general use, quick drying etc. I have bought some ISO BAA stuff from Sport Pursuit which has been great but I've found the media fit to be a little short in the torso and some items hold the smell after a certain amount of use. Any advice out there for moderately priced stuff?

I've got a vulpine long sleeve top that's done pretty well. It's long enough in the torso, and doesn't stink too bad. Got it on sports pursuit for OK money. I basically live in merino for cycling most of the year, short sleeve for summer, and try not to wash them too much to make them last!

My longest serving merino kit is all Icebreaker stuff. For longevity I find a merino blend better than 100% for lightweight base layers, as it seems to hold its shape better for longer. I've had other brands that have barely made it once through the wash before becoming so misshapen as to lose any sense of fit.

It does concern me that some of the cheaper brands don't think to include their sourcing policy in their product blurb.

I've tried a few, i find them great 70% of the year apart from when it's too cold or too hot.

I went on a quest to find the perfect long sleeve merino top planning to use it for Atlas....ended up not bringing any 😆

I got a DHB merino blend for cheap from SportsDirect. Good, size L fits me VERY snug. Sleeves are slightly short. Not too warm.

I bought a used Crikey, how much sportswool one from ebay. It has a couple of small holes in it but otherwise looks good. Warmer than DHB and with a better fit (more relaxed, longer sleeves).

I have a few bits from GRVL (all short sleeves) which are a blend of merino and tencel. They're a bit delicate but great most of the year in combination with arm warmers.

Friend has a TORM sportswool top which looks pretty good. Similar to Crikey, how much.

I had an Albion short sleeve merino baselayer. It's my only merino item that has shrunk and become useless after a wash.
Not a fluffy gravel rider.

A long sleeved Helly Hansen one, with a wee 1/4 zip.
Wear it about half the year and it's lasted years. Would buy again
