What's better than a Fitbit but not too complex?

My dad has a fitBit Inspire 2. Always assumed they were decent as they are always spoken about. Not for me..

It's broken down within about 8 months. So the plan as well as my little sister chasing the warranty is mainly getting him something slightly better. He mainly watches his steps counter and general health stats. Garmin I fear is too expensive (and IME or IMO and I might be wrong, Garmin don't always last in the GPS things).

Any suggestions of something that's not gonna cost an arm/leg but will give him some useful health metrics and a decent step counter. I looked up Suunto 9 but they're no longer for sale in the offers section (of about £200).

Oh... He's 71 and not a phone geek. Reads/uses his tablet for Quran memorisation duties only (I think). Oh, and I don't really believe in counting steps personally as well as the fact that the steps counter on the Suunto is a bit rubbish.

So I guess we're in a bit of a sticky situation especially since I want cheap, quality, usable. I dare not tell him much he should go for walks other than just down the road to the masjid or to the shops. Otherwise he's fit and active with DIY and gardening etc.

If his tablet is android then a Samsung 'Fit' of some sort would do if you can install the Samsung health app. My daughters is still going strong after 4 years and the battery lasts days.

I'd suggest a Samsung watch if the above looks like it would work but it'll need charging daily and that might be too much faff.

There are loads of Chinese options, e.g. Xiaomi, Amazfit, etc. but I guess you'll probably want to give those a swerve.

£34 too and same as the type of watch he's always worn all his life. Rest of the stuff as well as charging, is a bit of a faff for him. But he does it for the steps I guess (that was his first point about counting the steps).
