MYOG Bar Harness ("Barness")

Post by Tanglefist »

I made a handlebar harness which I call a barness. it's weighs 320 grams and seems to work well.

There are double layered elasticated straps for stuffing gloves/buff for quick access.

The materials were salvaged from various places, mostly it's an old suitcase. Working with plastic was initially quite difficult, but got easier as I went along. I punched all the holes into the plastic with a normal tack. I'll cover the threads at some point to prevent abrasion.

From the back. Ignore the dodgy stitching on the spacers. They're shaped to avoid pressing against the brake cables too much.

This thing stops it from flopping around at the bottom, it's a 'fast fender' from crud catcher. The barness velcros around it.

There are slightly different words on my blog (http://cyclocaust.blogspot.co.uk/2013/1 ... iymyog.html), but it's essentially the same content. Unfortunately I won't get a chance for months to use this piece of kit since I'm travelling.

I'm liking that, especially the elasticated bits, good idea. On the one I made I originally put buckle connecters on but found them hard to do up tight enough, I changed the ones that went round the dry bag for velcro and found it much easier to use.

Looks good...apart from the mudguard bit

I keep meaning to try and make something, probably using my revelate sling as a starting point

I like "barness"

Nice one. What did you use for the spacers?

I've been sketching out ideas for a few weeks but I don't think I'm quite there yet.

Cheers, I've given it the street/commute shakedown but not a proper throttling yet.

The spacers are made of a dense foam, from another suitcase. There are several layers to get the required height. It also has to be sufficiently dense provide enough resistance/structure when you pull the straps tight. I've stitched through them to hold them together, but stitching something that thick is really irritating.

I might add extra buckles to accommodate a jacket pouch or front pocket at some point. It's a pretty good DIY project, not as much tweaking required as the saddle holster which I'm still trying to get quite right.

Ha, I just found old ones on the street - they're everywhere when you start to look. She was mostly worried I'd be bringing fleas into the house.
