Frame Size comparisons...

Sometimes I wonder if I go too far with these things... but you've gotta know the stats...right?

I've been looking into a new frame for a week or so (not long in the grand scheme I know) to keep built up as a singlespeed, and I guess you cant have too many bikes right?

Anyway, I'd convinced myself that some brands were out of the picture for me as I fall in between the sizes available. I always knew fit and ride was more complicated than just the seat tube size and the effective TT measurement. Such things as BB drop, fork offsets and the good old reach and stack figures.

Interestingly (to me), the below shows this.
Red: Kona Raijin 18" Frame
Blue: Salsa El Mariachi 19" Frame
Green: Salsa El Mariachi 17" Frame

Compared to that please. I'm on a Medium (17") El Mar and I'm looking at a Cooker - specifically for the higher BB. The Charge website reckons I need a Medium but an email from them reckons a Small.

its an odd shaped frame. comes up quite big.
Theres no reach and stack listed so I used the actual TT length and Effective to position the TT.

I'll take off the Kona.

Also, the salsa is based on the listed fork length, which is the one I think I'm going to use compared to what I have on the kona.

are you using a standard fork of some sort? Like a reba?

Here you go,

Cooker is based on a 100mm reba - Sagged 20mm which has an un-sagged axle to crown of 506 ish, the salsa is on a fork length from their site (483mm)

I am 5'8" with a 28" inside leg and have a medium cooker which is a bit big for me. The saddle is well forward on the rails and I have no stand over height which could prove painful at some point but never has so far (just gone and damned myself now). Hope that helps. Lovely bike by the way.

Interesting. 5'7" here, but with a 30" Inside leg. I've managed to track down a medium frame on Pinkbike so I'm going to build that up to see how it feels. I only have rigid forks that would fit, but it'll do for now. If it's OK, I might consider splashing out on a Ti frame - or getting something made up with the correct geometry.

You're a star. FWIW, I'm running the El Mar with Rebas set at 100mm at the moment.

scotroutes, intrigued here, why the interest in the cooker's the higher bb for bikepacker use?

It's simply a function of leg length (and therefore saddle height) vs. wheel height.

I can (just) squeeze a decent sized seat pack but with no room to drop the saddle at any point.

Transferring my riding position to bar height, I have a similar problem at the front end of the bike. With rigid forks I'm OK, with suspension, the front tyre has worn a wee hole in my Revelate Sweet Roll.

I'm playing around with bags and carrying systems (I have a loan of a Revelate Harness from the guys at backcountrybiking) but I want to look at frame options too.

As an aside, a higher BB means fewer pedal strikes too (not something I suffer from overmuch TBH).

Ah ok, makes much sense. If you're riding it rigid with a permanently lower front (for a hardtail) then it could work well, no real negative.

I'm aware that there could be a few negative handling traits; a tendency to flop into corners would be one, twitchy steering could be another. However, I've seen a couple of reviews praising its handling - even making mention of the high BB.

At this point, I think it's just an itch I have to scratch!!!
