To be honest Zippy I've got one bike set up 1 x 10 everything else is either 9sp or SS. My concern with 1 x 10 are all the people flocking to it but then having to stick 30t front rings on or 42t rear cogs, etc. I can't help think that if you're riding 1 x 10 and require these 'cop-outs' then you might have selected the wrong set-up to start with ... uhm, marketing bollox maybe*
* apologies to anyone riding a 650B, set up 1 x 10 with 800mm bars.
The main reason for me still doing 9 speed - is that everything I own is 9 speed (road and MTB) apart from the singlespped bits I have. Therefore everything is interchangeable and I can bulk buy stuff like chains. I also reckon 9 speed will last longer as the chain is a bit wider....
I can't see the point on a 2x10 setup with a 42T cassette tooth - adjust your ratios a bit, I can see the point on a 1x10, but again with the advent of chainrings that can get smaller than 32T on the front with a decent chainline, that's gotta be cheaper/more suitable now :?:
Now, if it was a bit cheaper, it might be worth it
I really like that, at least the idea of it (and the colour...)
Firstly, half of my faffing around is just because I like faffing around.
Second, in an effort to save a chunk of weight I'm considering using a 1x10 set up over the summer months. In winter I'll stick to the Rohloff or SS
I have pretty much all the parts to try out a 1x10 (and to try a 1x6) and would like to try one of these out as it really opens the range up.
To be honest, for normal riding I would think its overkill, but it makes doing multi-dayers like the HTR on a 1x10 a bit more attractive.
Shame its soooo much cash. if it was 2/3rds of that price I would have bought one for sure.

Means you can run a larger small ring at the front, which means you can run a larger big ring and therefore gain some at the top end... thinking of something like 30-44 or 28-42.
I'm still on 8-speed all over, so building custom 13-36 cassettes is my current game
Well, that would be Christmas for yours truly sorted then. Thanks for the heads up and the discount code on this one Stu.
It's going on my OO Fatty together with a Raceface narrow wide 30T chainring if that ever gets here. Ive been struggling with the 32x36 gearing on the beast, especially in sucking mud with a bit of a load on it - 30x42 should be just the ticket. Shall report back on the levels of awesomeness once it's fitted.
Edit - the recommend pulling the 17T sprocket which makes sense to me.
The tooth profile only needs to engage the chain on the leading (loaded) edge of the gap between the teeth, what happens on the trailing edge doesn't really matter so long as it fits between the chain rollers. ActionTec have been selling these things for donkey's years, so I expect they're working for someone. Mixed reviews on MTBR, admittedly...

On-ones own 30t narrow-wide 104bcd on the way as well. I'm on a 32 with my fatty, it started with a 34. Heavy going on the beach at times.
Perfect for my Fargo, which with the silly 3 arm SRAM spider on the crank means I couldn't go any smaller up front than stock unless I replaced that and its far from worn out. Might mean I can get up some of the steeper stuff fully loaded again.
Only thing is that they are not shipping until mid January, which means probably not in time for you know what.

Very True.
Are you SS'ing the HTR again Ian? or not telling (which is fine obviously)?
I'm liking SS more and more but still know that for long, multi dayers (40miles in the peak and I'm done on the SS), my weakness means I need gears. How many exactly is yet to be determined.
Not sure about the 'shark tooth profile' though....
*edit*
The more I look at it, the more it looks pants.
Thanks for your help Dave, you appear to have found the other end of the market

Well, it did me proud at uni for lack of hassle and just working, but I did take me a while to be able to source all the bits to run 1/8" on a shimano freehub - needed to invest in a dremel to make the sprocket fit. But 1/8" singlespeed setup does last forever
I thought now that I was earning and could afford gears I'd do it...turns out I'm ending up swaying to a 1x9 setup as my happy medium. Will probs singlespeed MTB through the winter mind...well riding the MTB would be a good start actually
