Wtd: wellused/worn/unloved old down jacket/garm

Can be synthetic as I assume that might also work. Dont wanna spend much more than postage (sorry).

Gonna cut it down and sew it then add some tabs and make a jacket for my water bladder for extreme winter/summer duties.

How extreme are you planning for winter riding? I've never had a water bladder freeze whilst riding (I've had slush-puppie water bottles but still drinkable). Hoses can freeze but they can be insulated or you can take the precaution of blowing some air in after each drink to clear the hose of water.

Overnighting can be more of a problem right enough.

I'd feel bad cutting down a Patagonia just for my cycling and not wearing it. If noone else takes it and it fits me I might just take it anyway...

Colin... I managed 35c over summer I think and it was only by using the down jacket. I have a risk of pneumonia (had at least 2 after my viral heart infection so like not to risk drinking freezing water too much over long periods...

The inuslation you sent over the hose is spot on. Blowing air in, in my opinion (over time) would cause risk of introducing infection. We learnt at uni that the mouth has more bacteria than the bottom end (or something like that) and islamically we are advised against blow8ng on water before drinking (unsure if there's a link...)...

There is a mesh pocket on the inside you could slip it in there.

Yup... That's why I'm trying to seek out summat that's knackered and ready for the tippers/recylers

Not convinced a cosy would do such a good a job as some down insulation Stu. So far my Rab Microlight has been dpubling up for such duties but its a hefty affair for just acting as cosy...

Nope... Only cos the down jacket had me worted with nice cool water on a really really hot day. Then yesterday in minus 2 with a real feel of minus 7 (not sure if that's relevant) I managed to not have my tube frozen and the water coming through from the down'd bladder was nice and warm like I'd filled it.

Bought the Patagonia and will try to make a sleeve and gilet out of it. hopefully no issues with down leakage as its synthetic I believe...

Think Camelbak do (or used to do) an insulated bladder or sleeve. Used to have one for snowboarding..

This doesn't sound like a bad idea if the jacket really is a goner.

I'm not sure down is the best material for this though. Seems like it would be far too easy to compress it with the weight of the bladder. Wouldn't some sort of closed cell foam (e.g. an old mat) or even just bubble wrap (possibly that metallised stuff you get sometimes for keeping stuff cool) be more effective and easier to work with?

I’ve got a down jacket that’s knackered and for the bin you can have for postage, zip has completely gone and it’s only a karrimor one that’s had 10 years of use.
