So.
Considering that I'm regularly faffing about with maps and really enjoy doing so too I'm looking for some really nice online mapping software.
I currently use Bikehike to load and plot routes. Its really good for this, its also possible to upload a route and see where you went.
I also recently started to use garmin connect, which is pretty good. Although it seems a faff to upload a route from a garmin etrex as I need to pick each record manually. Not the end of the world, but annoying. It has a decent level of info too I guess.
Is there any online software, I'm happy to pay for something if it does the job, that allows me to plan and load routes, overlay routes, add points of interest to routes (like resupply points etc). I'd also like it to let me load up the route afterwards and see speed and elevation etc.
Also, I want to be able to download OS style maps, with my route and additional points on to PDF to take with me.
There must be one or two of us that have this sort of thing on the go. What do you recommend?

Re: Mapping?
I'm still running a really old copy of memory map on my pc coz I'm lazy and haven't moved on with the times.
Plan on getting to grips with some decent GIS software (probs qGIS coz it's open source and powerful) at some point (prob once I've got my masters out of the way)

Re: Mapping?
Route Buddy might be worth a look then, which may let you migrate from Windows to Mac at a later date. AFAIK, its the only mapping program that works on both platforms. Plus you can put the map data on your iPhone.
I use RB on Mac - it's OK, but not quite as polished as Tracklogs, which would be my preference for Windows only.

Re: Mapping?
I bought Route Buddy, and wish I hadn't, it's really fiddly and tricky to use, and slow to load tiles etc. The only thing I can see it being useful for is joining/splitting routes.
I use http://ridewithgps.com/ for all my route planning these days. If i need OS for reference, I use bing maps and choose OS mode. ridewithgps doesn't have os, but it does have google, sat, and OSM and OSM cycle maps.
As for garmin stuff, i have the OS 1:50 on one SD and I got OSM maps on another card which I put together from http://www.openfietsmap.nl/ you can choose tiles (http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/) and then it will package those tiles up into a format for your Garmin, and maybe other devices too, can't remember. The maps were detailed enough to get me un-lost in the high Sierra-Nevada in Spain.

Re: Mapping?
I have old copies of Fugawi and Memory Map - both have advantages and disadvantages. Fugawi is simple but lacks route creation, and Memory Map is good for routes, is full 1;25k and 1;50k for the whole of the UK and shows elevation etc. The route creation is a bit poor when it comes to editing routes. Would go with Memory Map again if I had to replace any software. I guess the maps I have are more than 10 years old now (but the hills haven't moved!)
Also have the Garmin connect software but never use that.
Used to have Magellan Mapsend and that was utter crap.
And I have some paper maps! I like maps me!

Re: Mapping?
