What energy gel?

Post by Ray Young »

I've never used energy gels before but I am thinking of getting some for the WRT but I have heard that they can cause stomach upsets. Is this down to the individual person or are some brands better tolerated than others and if so which?

I don't really use them as I prefer proper food and have had a bad reaction to some when I have but I have found I can take the Torq gels ok they seem much easier on the gut and taste nice too.

I get on fine with the High Five range. Discount supplements are cheapest, their marathon/race packs are good value. You'll have enough in them to try a few to see how you get on. Cash back through quidco as well.

Ray, remind me and I'll give you a few at the start. I can't stand the things so give away any I 'collect'.

I'm taking some energy gels on the WRT but I also make my own energy bars. Flapjack style bars with oats, nuts, honey, peanut butter etc. If anyone is interested I can post the recipe. It works out cheaper than buying proper bars which are actually a rip off when you look at the ingredients on the back. They're easy to make and you can adapt them the way you want. :)

Big bag full of performance boosting substances with your name on Ray. Ask Dee for it when you sign on.

You really can't beat homemade flapjack or something similar. I carried some in Scotland and nothing perked me up more than a good old lump of the stuff ;)

Unless you are going to be using them as fuel, and consuming them every hour or so I would probably just rely on normal food and take a couple of gels for emergencies-bonking etc.
I really like the Torq rhubarb and custard.
It is a bit like swallowing someone else's snot though.......
Energy bars however are really useful for snacking. Cliff ones are my fave.
You can make your own energy bars fairly easily, Flapjack type things.
Haribo actually work quite well for some people, again use towards end of day or in my experience you run the risk of bonking.
you can't beat a pint of porridge for breakfast.

This is how I make my flapjacks: In to a large bowl add some porridge oats, raisins, nuts (any kind you like), peanut butter, a small amount of plain flour, two eggs, melt a jar of set honey and pour that in and add enough cold water to mix everything. After mixing well the consistency should be thick and claggy. Scoop the mixture on to a baking tray lined with grease proof paper and smooth the mixture down so it's flat. Put it in the oven around 180 degrees or so for half an hour. Take them out when they are golden coloured, let them cool and cut them into slices. You can variate the recipe by adding other stuff like chocolate chips, coconut, hemp seeds, cherries, protein powder etc. You can have them for breakfast too.
