Any Scottish weather experts . . .

Post by adjustablewench »

I am planning on taking my two youngest boys to scotland to ride the great glen way. I'm having a dilema about timing - we usually do our big bike ride trip at easter but I checked last years weather and it was a bit chilly (-7 on april 5 apparently)but it could be measured at a weather station on a big cold hill for all I know. the other option is to go in May - but then we risk getting eated alivewe will be bikepacking and that does limit the amount of warmth we can carry - really am torn on this one!

I was out in Scotland for four nights in April last year and only one of them dropped below zero but what happens one year is no indication of what another year will be like. Also, looking on the internet the worst of the midge season for being bitten seems to be June to September. There's a website called midgeforcaste but it doesn't start until the 20 May so go before that and you should be okay. Don't camp in damp shady areas, pick a site with a breeze, before pitching hang around for a bit to see if they get attracted to you, if they do then move on to somewhere else. Enjoy your trip, I keep trying to persuade the wife to walk The Great Glen Way.

Agree with Ray, early May is usually good for weather but early for midges. Late May Bank Holiday I usually think of as the start of the midge season. 20+ years ago I was almost eaten live by the beggars in Ardlui camping one evening. Did a bit of GGW from Newtonmore to Drumnadroichit a few years ago. It is nice but some steep little climbs that I remember. Have a great trip and don't forget to post some pics!

If it is BH time watch out for the Highland Trail 430 race and listen out for 'Elite racer passing' No slowing us down ;-)

it would be late may as the boys are on half term the week after wrt - so it would be a wrt lite followed by a dash home and wash stuff, repack and go.

always loads of pics - but smaller riders than normal!

these are from last years easter trip around the isle of man (there are loads sorry just easier to add a link)
