does anyone use a mapboard?
I found one in the garage at the weekend but it didn't fit oversize bars and it also looked like it wouldn't let you get lights/gps on the bars too.
I'd like to make one but don't know where to start...

Steal a For Sale sign board thats made from corrugated plastic and cut it from that. You may need to double it up with the ribs of the plastic going in perpendicular fashion to one another, then glue them together.

Re: map board
Ian had a nifty MYOG map board at the WRT ... can't quite recall it in my head but it was very small and neat.

Re: map board
Ian did post instructions how to make it somewhere if I remember, I think it may have been on the STW monster thread somewhere or the WRT thread possibly. Also could've been on Ian's blog
I'm sure Ian will be along to enlighten us :D

Re: map board
I've got one of the Nordenmark boards for AR and MTBO stuff, and it's brilliant but not cheap. It's of massive use during a race because if you need to track your progress at pace you can rotate the board to align the tracks etc. paige if racing, for general riding, you'd be fine with a chunk of Correx board our one of the old Polaris Map Trap holders.
Note if you've not used either of those solutions before: I've known some people get quite freaked out by not being able to see their front wheel, especially on steep techy stuff. being able to see their front wheel, especially on steep techy stuff.

Re: map board
I've made several map boards from small pieces of perspex heated over the toaster (being careful not to melt the toaster, which takes a bit of practice) and bent into the desired shape.
However, my lightest solution is quite different:

One piece of cordura or similar fabric with a small hole in to allow it to be clamped between the stem and the stem cap, strip of sew on velcro sewn on opposing sides of the fabric, inserted into an Ortlieb waterproof document case (the ones with a roll over velcro closure. Use a couple of bulldog clips to hold the opposite end to your handlebar harness/ dry bag retaining straps etc. The bonus of this system is that the maps in the case remain waterproof.
The above was inspired by a pic of Jen Hopkins doing the TD a few years ago, where she used a large bulldog clip that was just clamped under the stem cap to hold route cues etc.
