Good to meet you both, and cheers for the shout and the chat! I knew wearing my BBBP jersey meant someone would spot me :)
I only did the northbound leg, and a bit slower than you two. Set off just before 7pm, got in just before 4am having had knee problems after Moffat, was a cracking ride though. The Devil's Beeftub was a much easier climb than I was expecting, just a steady spin all the way. The midgies were bad, but as someone else in the little bunch that adopted me put it "what would be worse, midgies or a headwind?". Didn't stop long at the Crook Inn, but stopped at the Hillend petrol station like you, the guy behind the counter was so bemused, he had no idea the event was on and couldn't understand why all these riders kept streaming in for snacks and drinks. I'd highly recommend it to anyone though, we couldn't have had much better weather overnight and the atmosphere was ace.
I had an easier second half, after a beer at the end I rolled a few miles along the front to a mate's flat near Leith, got a few hours kip, then my Dad came up from Carlisle so we went out for lunch and then drove home.
Posted this shot on Facebook, entitled "4:26am". Not the best pic I've ever taken, but immensely satisfying.
