It has absolutely nothing to do with bikes ..

... but I thought some of you might be interested.

Dee has an archery competition coming up and they stipulate that only traditional arrows are used. That means, hand cut fletchings that are bound to the shaft and self nocked arrows which involves fitting horn inserts into the end of the shaft to prevent it shattering when shot ... it's a fairly time consuming task. Anyway here's number 1, only another 11 to go.

Long bow arrows. Lovely things they are. Very neat work.
I'm just going outside ...

She only shoots longbow. I've had to scale these down a little with 5/16" shafts and smaller fletchings as her usual bow's only 26lb ... the War bow arrows I've got just laugh at it

There was a question about how many arrows an archer needed in medieval battles due to the contemporary accounts of the sky turning black, etc. The answer apparently is not a lot as there were boys employed to head out on the battlefield and pick the arrows out of the dead and dying for reuse!

They were usually issued with two dozen 'livery' arrows that were all made to the same specs but most also had a dozen of their own which were higher quality ... but they generally didn't waste those shooting the French

This is the kind of point you'd have found on something coming out of the rows of archers 600 years ago ... can't have been pleasant on the receiving end of 1000 of these.

My sister took up archery about three years ago and settled on the longbow. She has done great this year winning quite a few gold medals at county standard. Ages ago she attended college to do a cabinet making course and has just now started making her own bows and arrows.

Keep meaning to have a go at making a bow, especially now I've found some Lemon wood.

Silly question as no nothing about this but did you make the shaft or buy in or even just snap a branch of some hazel like I did as a kid?

I usually just buy unfinished shafts then match them for weight and spine (bendiness).

Still nothing to do with bikes but does involve setting things on fire. I don't usually attend archery events but the chance to make flaming arrows and test them out, was too much for my inner firestarter to resist

It's supposed to be your sister's jeans, not dress!

Does look like damn good fun! I'm hoping it was an empty field you were shooting into rather than sheep running around petrified!

Lots of fun and burnt fingers Ben. Target was a wooden / card castle :-bd

We also got the chance to shoot at real people dressed in armour, which was also a lot of fun in a strange kind of way.

Burning sheep? Preposterous!

Usually when the welsh have flaming arrows they're pointing them at the English!

(based on my nationality, I'm not sure which end of the bow I'd actually end up on  )

Always wanted to try my hand at more traditional archery, back when I practiced I mostly used compounds and double shortbows, having electronic sights was cool...having to string the damn thing wasn't :???:
