Re: When you're not sure if it's a spoof....
Talk about over egging the pudding - they did a bike tour from (I guess) Kinbrace to Durness, got the ferry and then did the road to the lighthouse, then back again. I mean its a nice trip but doing it 'unsupported' is hardly a major achievement.
Oh well at least they enjoyed themselves! Looking at the weather and the still evident snow I'd guess they were up at the end of May - wonder if they bumped into any Highland Trail riders

I enjoyed that..
No dick swinging, no look at me, no Strava, just a nice, gentle video..
And they looked like they enjoyed it.
Good on 'em..

I'm still trying to work out where they went that wasn't on tarmac (like the bit where the rider fell over) and the vaguely exciting trail to the lighthouse is used by a minibus.

Re: When you're not sure if it's a spoof....
They were on the Ben hope road just after so I think they went down the track to Gobernuisgach lodge and then turned off along the river - there is a track along here which rejoins the road near Dun Dornagail Broch. I thought they might have done the old road from Cashel Dhu to Eribol but looks like they went round the tarmac road instead. Although the hope road doesn't have much tarmac on it!ScotRoutes wrote:I'm still trying to work out where they went that wasn't on tarmac (like the bit where the rider fell over) and the vaguely exciting trail to the lighthouse is used by a minibus.

I liked it too - thought it was going to be a bit "hipster beards and coffee grinders" but was pleasantly surprised. Need to do more of those sorts of trips myself!
Re: When you're not sure if it's a spoof....
They were hipsters though! London ones too
Couldn't help noticing the outdoor fire at Kervaig directly onto the grass
and they'd packed dried figs... That said it did look great fun and they seemed nice blokes. No sign of any giant wheels of cheese or entire bottles of whisky in squashy flasks...

Can't people just be happy that other people are enjoying themselves? Level of cynicism that is erupting because "our thing" is becoming popular is quite disturbing.
As with Rich, nice film I enjoyed it.

Not my cup of tea at all but each to their own.
Re: When you're not sure if it's a spoof....
A very good point! I wrote about 5 replies and deleted them but still cant quite nail down why the video was a bit annoying... I mean they seem nice blokes, thought they did do a pretty easy ride! But they are from Landahn so they don't know! The fire on the grass at kervaig though, grr! Again, they are just new lads. Maybe I'm just jealous of the excellent beards. Mine is going a bit greyGregMay wrote:Can't people just be happy that other people are enjoying themselves? As for what Greg says and i really enjoyed that film too. For me its not all about the long miles and hard rides all the time. Sometimes its nice to take it easy and have fun. And i personally would of loved to have joined those guys on that trip!!
Again thanks for sharing these films as in crap at finding them on the net

Aye, something grated with me too? Probably says more about me than them though.

I've not watched it due to my p1ss poor internet connection - however, the mention of campfires, means that I probably don't need to. I'll take a guess and say, they had coffee makers with them?

I thought that they definitely looked wanky but they seem to have had fun.
This is a win in my book (the fun bit, in case it's not clear
).
It's all too easy to sneer....

Plus +2 to Dr May and the Pips...
Its a nice film trying to capture the spirit of travel with friends.
Equally they're a nice set of lads over at Pannier, I caught up with them last March for their weekender which was great fun.
I mean if we're being cynical about things...I'm sure some of the guys from the roughstuff fellowship might be equally cynical about bikepacking....

Should we be being so critical of others enjoying themselves. Each to their own I say, they are out there doing it!

Only watched it at work so no sound so don't know if the commentary contradicts this.
Would you/we/I view it differently if it hadn't appeared on the bikepacker site but just on their Vimeo or YouTube feed? There's a subconscious authority such sites can give to content that possibly wasn't there in the original which might have just been a film of a bunch of mates on a trip.

Re: When you're not sure if it's a spoof....
Very good point Bob. Will anyone watch this and think it's accepted practice to light campfires? ... possibly. Did the lads in the film think lighting a fire was okay because they'd seen it somewhere else? ... who knows but maybe. There's a subconscious authority such sites can give to content that possibly wasn't there in the original which might have just been a film of a bunch of mates on a trip.

Re: When you're not sure if it's a spoof....
Watched it a couple of times and thought it looked like a very nice time was had by all and what weather they had eh? Love that coast.
To be fair it looked like the camp fire at the bothy was on a regularly/well used spot; not so with the second fire though.
The inverted snob in me laughed at some of it, especially slicing a lime to go in the water bottle, but essentially I wish I was there!

Hang on: you're in Shetland. You are there!...but essentially I wish I was there!
Were they on 'gravel bikes', by any chance?

May you always have tail wind.
