Re: Heart of Wales line

I live right next to the HOWL, can see it from the house. The new carriage is certainly an eye opener, but have plans to use soon, so will report any findings. :-bd Only concern is how many are there? If there's only the one then it will be pot luck if it turns up when you want to use it? St...

Re: That Tent Question

Trusty Vango Force 10 MK1. Snug, low profile and just keeps going. Weighting is at what, 9KG or something mental. Great tents, but wouldn't want one strapped to me bike... MK1 was the 'Ultralight' I think - only weighed 1.5kg if you used a single front pole. Yep, indeed it was. Have managed to redu...

Re: Wanted - 3 season bag

Noted. 3 season usage covers quite a wide seasonal range and temp requirements weren't detailed in OP but was suggested for cost and as its only for BAM , could weight could be considered a secondary need? Packs smallish and is fine with a silk liner. Longer jaunts, then yes the down option is used ...

Re: What are you reading now?

Forged by Speed - Steve Peat. Perhaps not in the purview of most on here, but certainly an interesting take on what I remember back in the early days of the UK MTB scene as quite a decisive character but has mellowed as the years have rolled by. IMHO Now if JMC had not tragically been killed in his ...

Re: Are new GPS units much better than older ones?

Has anyone had any experience with the Garmin GPS65 Topo, all this talk of retail therapy has whetted the appetite for a new unit. Fancy the 65 but would like to how easy/difficult it is to use, as there are online suggestions that the Basecamp route tool is a bit ponderous so can files from komoot...

Re: Are new GPS units much better than older ones?

The Oregon is a fine bit of kit, a bit along the lines of 'if it ain't broken, blah blah'....... but tech moves on, but not always in the interests of the end user or for the best! Use a phone with OS Locate for GRs is a great resource too. I found a map reading course useful too. Supplement the tec...

Anyone who has properly smashed themselves up in a bike crash ignore, this is for wusses like me who do stupid things.... So a month or so back I was out on the Krampus on a dark, but unseasonably dry and calm night. Semi fallen tree at trail side decides to grab hold of bars and wrench them from m...

Re: Are new GPS units much better than older ones?

As said, existing GPS availability hasn't changed fundamentally for a few years so the old Garmins (etrek, vista) etc will still provide the same level of accuracy albeit a bit slower, compared to current units, Edge etc, which have improved processing ability to acquire faster and hold the signal i...
