Re: Hilleberg Akto
As a confessed tentaholic i have owned most of the tents mentioned. The ideal tent does not exist, all are comprimises. I use different tents /tarps at different times of the year The Akto is a very solid tent and easy to get a good taught pitch, quickly, in crap weather, with wet and cold hands. Qu...

Re: bikes with super short stems & a Jones bar
When i fitted my Jones loops ( 660mm wide ) i think i went up from 70 to 90mm on my Salsa.
I have just fitted some Jones copies ( On one Jeff's ), cut them to 660mm and gone up 10mm on a different bike.

Re: Fitting Jones Loops
Hi, I'm running the CF loops. Were 710mm but i cut them down to 660mm to match the Ti loops i had. The CF are better at shock absorbing but the Ti's feel bombproof. I run a 90mm stem whereas with straight bars i'd be running 60-70mm on the same bike ( Salsa El Mariachi ) I tried the Ergon Grips but ...

Have used the Schwalbe 19A they are ok but i prefer the Specialized Turbo @ 150-160g
They moulding seams are less pronounced meaning they are easier to fix if the hole is near a seam

Re: Six Moon Designs Deschutes
Hi Sean The Six Mood Designs recommended peg set includes an 8" nail peg for the main line. I took an Alpkit Spike which is the same dimensions as the SMD peg but it's quite a heavy and chunky thing. Is the bigger front peg really required? I use Easton Nail pegs with my Deschutes. I think you ...

Re: “Best” cycling waterproof trousers
i've had a few pairs of the Montane Atomic ones over the years. Basically exactly the same spec as the Rab ones.
I think if i was buying again i would go for the Rab ones as the current version of the Atomic's have full length zips and are thus heavier / less waterproof / less breathable

Re: Winter Gloves
Like many others I have tried countless gloves and my one piece of advice is never ever buy a glove made from 2 or more layers of material down together. They always turn into a nightmare if you ever take them off once wet. Separate layers are the answer so i use a mongrel version of the dissent 133...

mounting a water bottle horizontally on the top tube
My current setup has a water bottle in a cage on the seat tube my frame bag is correspondingly smaller as a result i use a long / wide MYOG top tube bag with a capacity of about a litre. The top tube bag is ok in the dry but in rain the stuff inside invariably gets soaking wheras the frame bag keeps...

Big fan of the the Salsa El Mariachi
i have a steel XL. A skinny tubeset gives a nice ride, Alternator dropouts makes it versatile. Will take the alternator rack
having said that finding one won't be easy, it took me 6 months

Re: Gloves
I have been trying to find the perfect glove combinations for ages. Layering seems to be the answer I start with a pair of lightweight work gloves ( Honeywell workeasy ) they are light ( 26g), thin, breathable, and @ £1.50 a pair it doesn't matter if they get trashed mending the bike. On top i use a...

Custom made Paramo's from "Cioch" on the Isle of Skye. lovely people. I got a pocketless, smock design with a close cut hood for under helmet use and long arms made for a very reasonable price. I have never wetted out in my Paramo and the breathability is fantastic so you really can wear a...

+1 for ron hill type things, i personally use Altura cruisers as the legs are a bit longer. I use them as pub wear, sleep wear and if its unexpectedly cold them i can cycle in them.
