is my tool for gravel ride planning.
the map must be missing some areas. Stratford-upon-avoin is almost bare in footpath/ bridleway versions - but the OS map shows at least a normal amount of FP/ BWs??

Re: Feeling the cold more as you get older?
Not related to ageing but recently suffered a bout of (mild) hypothermia after cycling through flood water for a bit too long! Since then i've noticed the cold a lot more - and been more sensitive to cold. I used to start a ride and deal with being cold for a few miles - warm up and be comfortable. ...

Re: Training thread
I'm not sure my opinions are worth much as I never seem to be as fast as perhaps i should be for the riding, and talking about training i do! However i have seen a reasonable improvement in (usable) bike fitness in the last couple of years - since I focused on threshold work - in particular around 2...

Re: Your input please ..
i think the thing that will set the bike apart as a bike packing bike as opposed to any other MTB with some bags is small details. anything cages - or even just bottle mounts on the fork. bottle cages which are low to allow half frame bags - and the front mech to be mounted in the correct place spec...

stay away from any houses and you'll be fine. It will be flooded in a lot of areas atm - as brian says stick to the cyclepaths/ fireroads as everything else will be totally sodden. you need some high(er) ground to stop on. http://www.forestry.gov.uk/pdf/new-forest-cycle-code.pdf/$FILE/new-forest-cyc...

training? not exactly going well - My OH fell over and has broken her elbow - this means i have to take her to work (in the car) so i'm missing the commute (115 km/week) it's also eating into evenings and weekends as i'm doing all the housework instead of half. I rode for 2 hours on the turb...

Re: Recommend me some grippy jelly bar tape
cinelli gel pads are great. - just make sure you position it right before wrapping. cinelli gel cork tape is good. A couple of years ago i met big maggy - his bike had a double wrap of tape from the hoods back. i tried it this weekend and so far it's great. stupidly fat to hold the tops (i find this...

Re: Powder Coaters - recommendations
you wont get candy in a powder coat. Powder is only available in a limited colour range (compared to paint at least). Candy is a paint finish. I wouldn't rule out paint. Treston finishers (southampton) did my mates bike in paint as the colour wasn't availble in powder- and it lasted well. good paint...

Re: If there were a UK 'gravel race' ...
At the moment the americans are coming to some consensus as restless native has mentioned. What are the characteristics that make a gravel bike different to a cross bike?
The point I was was trying to make is that we might end up with a UK gravel bike having lower gears added to that too.

Re: If there were a UK 'gravel race' ...
I consider it a lightweight mountain bike that's an important point. 'gravel' bikes are a new thing (run with me roughstuffers) and things are still being determined. it's not like cross racing, it's not like american gravel riding: comparative climbing figures show that. My roadie mates look at me...

Re: MTB chainset on CX - anyone?
i've gone from 36/50 to 36/44 it's like night and day. the jump is small enough that you can change rings and not stall/ spin/ search around for 3 changes at tht rear. but also you can ride sensibly in both CRs. i might change to 34/44 to gain a little low end. don't miss the top end at all. yes i c...
